Edgar "RCTID Thiago" Guerrero, Portland Timbers' eMLS competitor, lost a hard-fought, 2-1 battle to the LA Galaxy's Giuseppe "Godfather" Guastella Sunday in the Knockout Round of the 2020 eMLS Cup presented by Coca-Cola and Playstation.
The FIFA 20 tournament, postponed from its original location at SXSW in Austin, Texas due to COVID-19, took place Sunday with players participating from remote locations across the country.
In a unique twist for this stage of the tournament, eMLS players constructed their roster using MLS FIFA Ultimate Team cards. RCTID Thiago, who came into the tournament final bracket as the 11th seed via the strength of his run to the semifinals at eMLS League Series Two held in Portland last February, jumped out to an early lead against Godfather – seeded 6th – when Alejandro Pozuelo slotted home a goal for the Timbers off a corner kick set-piece in the fifth minute.
The Galaxy and Godfather equalized quickly scoring a goal of their own in the ninth minute. They then added another goal in the second half. RCTID Thiago, searching for an equalizer, nearly found one when his Josef MartÃnez, hassled by an LA defender late in stoppage time, pushed his shot inches wide of the left post just before the final whistle.
FC Cincinnati's Gordon "Fiddle" Thornsberry, despite winning both League Series One in Philadelphia and League Series Two in Portland, would not pull off a treble run as he lost to the New York Red Bulls' George Adamou in the quarterfinals. The eighth-seeded Adamou fought his way to the championship for a Battle of New York final against third seeded New York City FC's Christopher "Didychrislito" Holly. Adamou came out on top to win the 2020 eMLS Cup with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline after extra time.
