Timbers defender Finn Surman featured again for New Zealand, but a rough start for the squad resulted in a 4-1 loss to the United States in Olympics action on Saturday.
MARSEILLE, FRANCE – Portland Timbers defender Finn Surman and New Zealand were handed a 4-1 loss by the United States at Stade de Marseille in Olympic action on Saturday. Surman played the full 90 minutes.
It was a tough opening half hour for New Zealand, allowing three goals. They scored a goal in the 78th minute to avoid being shut out; it was the first loss of group play for New Zealand.

Surman has started each of New Zealand’s first two Group A matches, including the opening win over Guinea on July 24.
New Zealand sits third in Group A with a 1-1-0 (3pts) record and faces a must-win scenario when they play host France on Tuesday, July 30; kickoff is 10 a.m. (Pacific).
The top two countries from each group advance to the knockout rounds.
