Group play at the Algarve Cup and Cyprus Cup began on Wednesday as the United States, Canada, Australia and England all picked up wins in opening group matches.
Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair continued her hot streak, scoring for a third consecutive international match, while she also tallied the assist on Jessica Fleming’s first international goal in a 2-0 win for Canada against Scotland in the Cyprus Cup.
Defender Rhian Wilkinson started and played the full 90 minutes, adding the assist on Sinclair’s goal in the 54th minute, as Canada extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches. Midfielder Kaylyn Kyle did not appear in the match.
Two Thorns FC players saw the pitch as the United States earned a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Norway in its opening group match at the Algarve Cup. Alex Morgan made her third straight start, playing nearly 80 minutes, while midfielder Tobin Heath entered the match in the 79th minute as a substitute. Australia picked up three points in its opening match of the Cyprus Cup against The Netherlands with a 1-0 victory as Thorns FC defender Steph Catley started and played all 90 minutes in the win.
Nadine Angerer made the start in goal for Germany, which fell in its opening group match to Sweden to open the Algarve Cup, while England picked up a 3-1 win against Finland at the Cyprus Cup, but forward Jodie Taylor did not feature in the match.
