The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.

Reportero Bilingüe es un programa comunitario diseñado para animar a los jóvenes de estar orgullosos de su herencia Hispana y su idioma. Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.
Interview - Entrevista
Question 1) “How many years have you been playing professionally?”
Pregunta 1) “Cuántos años llevas jugando fútbol profesionalmente?”
Diego Chara: “This year it will be my 10th year playing professionally”
Respuesta: “En este 2016 cumplo 10 Años jugando futbol profesional” reclama Chará
Question 2) “ Before you started playing soccer, was there any other sport that interested you?
Pregunta 2) “Antes de empezar a jugar fútbol, había otro deporte que te interesaba jugar”
DC: “Not at all, since the beginning it was always soccer, my first gift at age 4 was a ball, it comes from family, the bloodline, because my brothers are professional soccer players, and my most beloved sport has always been soccer.”
Respuesta: “No. Siempre ha sido el fútbol, desde los 4 años mi primer regalo fue un balón, creo que viene de familia, corre en la sangre, mis hermanos son jugadores profesionales, y bueno creo que el deporte que más me interesaba siempre fue el fútbol.”
Question 3) “What motivates or inspires you to become a better soccer player?”
Pregunta 3) “Qué te motiva o inspira en ser mejor jugador de fútbol”
DC: "What motivates me well.. Let's see the goals that I've had ever since I started playing pro, is to be champion in the league which we accomplished and to go for more championships. And well I want to be better all the time, be in the best of moments, do my job the best I can, I think that that's the motivation I have daily to keep moving forward.”
Respuesta: “Que me motiva? a ver las metas que me trace desde que empecé a jugar futból profesional, el año pasado conseguimos unas de esas metas, que era ser campeón aquí en la liga, y bueno creo que ser mejor, y estar en el mejor momento siempre, y hacer mi trabajo lo mejor posible, creo que eso es la motivación que tengo diariamente para seguir adelante.”
Question 4) “Was it hard to become a professional soccer player?”
Pregunta 4) “Fue difícil pasar a ser jugador profesional?”
DC: “It was really hard, it's a sport in where you need a lot of discipline and patience like in any other sport, when you think things aren't going to turn out the way they're going to turn out have patience. And yes it was very difficult, but thank god I was able to accomplish it.”
Respuesta: “Muy dificil, es un deporte que requiere mucha disciplina y paciencia, como todos los deportes. En los momentos que uno cree que las cosas no van a salir bien, tener paciencia en esos momentos. Y si fue difícil.. Pero bueno, gracias a dios lo pude conseguir.”
Question 5) “A lot of children admire you and see you as an idol, how does it feel to be the idol of these kids, and what would you say to them?”
Pregunta 5) “Una gran cantidad de niños que admiran y te ven como un ídolo, ¿cómo se siente al ser el ídolo de estos niños, y qué le dirías a ellos?”
DC: “Let's see more than anything I think I am a figure that's growing, the kids enjoy the way I play, and they see me enjoy every minute of the game. My words to them is that if they want to become professional soccer players to try it and never give up and reach your goals.”
Respuesta: “Pues veamos, yo creo que soy una figura que está creciendo, los niños disfrutan de la forma en que juego y me ven disfrutar de cada minuto de partido. Mis palabras a ellos es que si quieren convertirse en jugadores profesionales de fútbol que lo intenten y nunca se dan por vencidos y alcancen sus objetivos.”
Question 6) “Before starting your professional career did your parents support you, into reaching your life goals?”
Pregunta 6) “Antes de comenzar tu carrera profesional tus padres te apoyaron, en el logro de tus objetivos de vida?"
DC: “Always. My parents always supported me, both of my brothers are also professional soccer player, there support was very important for what we are today as people, we are very athletic, and I believe that it's always fundamental to have your families support.”
Respuesta: “"Siempre. Mis padres siempre me apoyaron, mis dos hermanos también son jugadores de fútbol profesional, el apoyo fue muy importante para lo que hoy somos como personas, somos atletas, y creo que siempre es fundamental contar con el apoyo de la familia.”
Question 7) “When two rivals clash. Real Madrid v FC Barçelona. Who do you go for?”
Pregunta 7) “Cuando se enfrentan dos rivales, el Real Madrid v FC Barçelona, a quien le vas?”
DC: “Let's see , I would say that the football that's always caught my attention has been Barçelonas, they play a very disciplined football, they very much like to dominate the ball and the opponent , and I think that's why they've been very successful in recent years.”
Respuesta: “Veamos, yo diría que por fútbol, siempre me ha llamado la atención Barcelona, juega un fútbol muy disciplinado, dominan mucho el balón y el rival, y bueno creo que por eso han tenido mucho éxito en los últimos años.”
Question 8) “You told me you had 2 brothers that are professional soccer players, what are their names and who do they play for, and are you in contact with them or see them at all?”
Pregunta 8) “Usted me dijo que tenía 2 hermanos que son jugadores profesionales de fútbol, ¿cuáles son sus nombres y con quien juegan. Está en contacto con ellos?”
DC: “The oldest is Luis Felipe , he plays in Colombia , the team is called Aguilas De Antioquia . He is 35 years old. And then follows Yimmi who is turning 25, he plays with Los Dorados de Sinaloa. And yeah I'm always in contact with them. But it's hard to see each other due to the far distances, we do get together during December when possible and share special moments.”
Respuesta: “El mayor es Luis Felipe, que juega en Colombia, el equipo se llama Águilas de Antioquia. Él tiene 35 años. Y luego sigue Yimmi que, juega con Los Dorados de Sinaloa. Va cumplir 25 años. Y sí yo estoy siempre en contacto con ellos. Pero es difícil vernos debido a la distancia, casi siempre en diciembre nos reunimos en familia y tratamos de compartir esos momentos.”
Question 9) “Have You Been To Mexico?”
Pregunta 9) “Has Ido a México?”
DC: “No. I haven't had the opportunity to go to Mexico. I hope now that my brother is over there that I can go and visit and explore, and be with him.”
Respuesta: “No. Hasta el momento no he tenido la oportunidad de viajar a México. Espero ahora que mi hermano esta allá podré visitar y pasar tiempo con él?”
