The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
“It’s the most beautiful sport in the world." Players like Pelé and Diego Armando Maradona have expressed their feelings about soccer in this way. And Diego Valeri, the Argentinian midfielder of the Portland Timbers, agrees.
“From youth [soccer] should be lived with a lot of passion," he told me during an interview that he granted me this past 22nd of March. And that is exactly what he has done.
Diego Valeri, also known as ‘El Maestro’, made his professional debut September 27, 2003 and since then, thanks to all his effort, dedication and love for the game, has accomplished the unthinkable.
“I had the opportunity to become champion with two distinct teams for the first time in their history," he said, which is something that not many can boast. However, Diego didn’t mention this with the intention of being applauded for his achievement, but because of the complete happiness he feels knowing that it has been precisely his love for soccer what has given him the glory. But, the love of the celebrated and esteemed number ‘8’ is not limited to soccer, but shared with the Portland Timbers team and all of his fans.
When asked if after all this success he dreamed of returning to Europe or trying his luck in other leagues in the American continent, without thinking twice, he told me it was not in his plans. On the contrary, he made very clear that his only focus at the moment is what he can accomplish with the Timbers, a team that he has come to highly esteem. He also expressed a particular interest in playing an important role in the CONCACAF league. With regards to the fans, he told me that he felt deep gratitude and that everything he has achieved on the field has always been done with the intention of satisfying those who always support him week after week.
To finish the interview, I asked what advice he would give to the young men and women who wish to one day become professional soccer players. He responded that it was important to leave everything for the sport, but more than anything, to play to be happy, because without happiness there is no profit in this career.
Through his great abilities as a player and his encouraging words for the future generations of soccer players, there’s no doubt that Valeri will become an idol for many. It was a true honor and privilege to speak with the Diego that few people know and at the same time, with ‘El Maestro’ who every weekend we watch represent with dignity the City of Roses.

Reportero Bilingüe es un programa comunitario diseñado para animar a los jóvenes de estar orgullosos de su herencia Hispana y su idioma. Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. “Es el deporte más lindo del mundo”. Así se han expresado jugadores como Pelé y Diego Armando Maradona sobre el fútbol. Y Diego Valeri, el mediocampista argentino de los Timbers, está de acuerdo.
“Desde joven [el fútbol] se debe vivir con mucha pasión”, me contó durante la entrevista que me concedió este pasado 22 de marzo. Y esto es justamente lo que él ha hecho.
Diego Valeri, también conocido como ‘El Maestro’, debutó como jugador profesional de fútbol el 23 de septiembre del 2003, y desde entonces--gracias a mucho esfuerzo, dedicación y amor al deporte--ha logrado lo impensable.
“Tuve la oportunidad de ser campeón en dos clubes por primera vez en su historia”, me dijo, algo de lo que pocos jugadores pueden presumir. Sin embargo, Diego no lo menciona con la intención de ser aplaudido por tan gran mérito, sino por la felicidad absoluta que siente al saber que ha sido precisamente su pasión por el deporte que lo ha llevado a la gloria. Pero, el amor de este célebre y tan querido numero ‘8’ no se limita al fútbol, este amor lo comparte con el equipo de los Timbers y toda su afición.
Al preguntarle si después de tanto éxito soñaba con regresar a Europa o probar suerte en otras ligas del continente americano, sin pensarlo dos veces me dijo que no estaba en sus planes. Al contrario, dejó muy claro que su único enfoque en este momento es lo que pueda lograr con los Timbers, equipo que ha llegado a estimar mucho. Expresó también su particular interés en hacer un buen papel en la CONCACAF. En cuanto a la afición, me contó que sentía pleno agradecimiento y que todo lo logrado en la cancha era con intención de satisfacer siempre a la gente que lo apoya semana tras semana.
Para concluir la entrevista, le pregunté qué consejo le daría a los jóvenes que deseaban poder ser algún día futbolistas profesionales. Él me respondió que era importante dejar todo por el deporte, pero más que nada, jugarlo para ser feliz, ya que sin la felicidad no existe ganancia alguna en esta carrera.
A través de su gran habilidad como jugador y sus palabras motivadoras hacia las futuras generaciones de futbolistas, no cabe duda que Valeri se convertirá en un ídolo de muchos. Fue un honor y un privilegio poder charlar con el Diego que pocos conocen y a la vez, con ‘El Maestro’ que cada fin de semana vemos como digno representante de la Ciudad de las Rosas.
