The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
“Started with the Mexican leagues, where I got my passion”, said Farfan when I asked him where did his dream all start from. He told me how when he was a little boy he looked up to his father and his brother who both played in these leagues, which he ended up being a part of as well and where it all began.
Marco Farfan signed as a homegrown player on October 14, 2016, for the 2017 season. That same season, Farfan had five starts in six regular-season appearances. In the 2018 season, he has started four games in 8 regular-season appearances.
Any kid with a dream of being a professional soccer player always has a Lionel Messi or a Cristiano Ronaldo that they think of because that is someone they look up to and want to be like. But when I asked Farfan, he told me that his brother was the player that he looked up to. “Being the youngest, just growing up and watching my older brother play, I'm always supportive of him. Getting into college and him being the one to do everything first, I really looked up to him” he told me “I want to be like him.”
We also talked about what it was like signing his first contract and what his family thought about it. And how it was different for him since he was still in high school when he first signed on. He told me how at school, he was viewed somewhat differently from his peers. Although he brought attention to himself during school, he said he always remained the same humble person. Throughout this whole process and even now, he talked about how college and his professional career are the two things that he is focused on and that are important to him. But most importantly, his family because they are the ones who are most supportive of him and his dream. He explained to me that their support lead him to where he is now.
The Portland Timbers are a very diverse group. All the players come from different parts of the world. One of my last couple of questions I asked Farfan was about the diversity of this group and how it was on and off the field. “On the field, you just need to know soccer. Just need to know what the coach wants us to do. But in the locker room, there is pretty much a little something of everything. You hear different types of music, teammates dancing different types of styles.” He told me how they all get along so well. He said, “Diverse group but very united.”

“Empezó con las ligas Mexicanas, donde encontré mi pasión”, dijo Farfan cuando le pregunté de dónde salió ese sueño de ser un jugador profesional. Me dijo que cuando era niño él admiraba mucho a su padre y a su hermano quienes jugaban en esas ligas, de lo que terminó siendo parte también y donde todo comenzó.

También hablamos sobre cómo fue firmar su primer contrato y qué pensaba su familia al respecto. Era diferente para él, ya que todavía estaba en la escuela secundaria cuando firmó por primera vez. Me dijo que en la escuela, lo veían de una manera diferente sus compañeros. Dijo que siempre había sido la misma persona humilde. A lo largo de todo este proceso e incluso ahora, la universidad y su carrera profesional son unas de dos cosas en las que se concentra y que son importantes para él. Pero lo más importante, es su familia porque ellos son los que más lo apoyan a él y a su sueño. Me explicó que su apoyo lo ha llevado llevó a donde está ahora.
Los Portland Timbers son un grupo muy diverso. Todos los jugadores vienen de diferentes partes del mundo. Una de mis últimas preguntas a Farfan fue sobre la diversidad de este grupo y cómo era dentro y fuera del campo. "En el campo, solo necesitas saber fútbol. Solo necesitamos saber lo que el entrenador quiere que hagamos. Pero en el vestidor, ahí de todo. Escuchas diferentes tipos de música, compañeros de equipo que bailan diferentes tipos de estilos ". Me dijo que todos se llevan bien. Me dijo: "Grupo diverso pero muy unido".
