The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
Ever since he was young, Marco Farfan looked up to his older brother who played for the Timbers U-23. Growing up, he was surrounded by soccer and the love for the sport. Although a senior in high school and with many distractions like prom and graduation, Farfan still attends practice in the mornings before school.
He says his parents are very supportive of his soccer aspirations as are his teachers and other mentors. When asked how he manages to balance school and soccer he says, "I just try to stay focused and try and pursue my dream." Even though I only spoke to him for a little while, his humility about his achievements impressed me tremendously.
Watching him practice and train with the rest of the guys made me realize that not only is he disciplined but very determined as well. Farfan has made a name for himself for being an 18 year-old and being a professional soccer player for the Timbers. Marco has achieved a dream of most young adults: to be paid to do something you love.
A few weeks before my interview with Marco, he was a starter for the first time against LA Galaxy. He did not mention he was nervous but simply said, "It was fun." When my time with him concluded, I asked one last question. What is something you would like to say to others? He responded, "Don't let yourself get distracted; stay focused on what you have to do to better yourself in your next step."

Reportero Bilingüe es un programa comunitario diseñado para animar a los jóvenes de estar orgullosos de su herencia Hispana y su idioma. Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.
Desde pequeño, Marco Farfan admiraba a su hermano mayor que jugaba para los U23 Timbers. Dice que creciendo, estaba alrededor del deporte y el amor hacia ello. Aunque está en su último año de preparatoria y hay muchas distracciones como el baile de “prom” y graduación, Farfan aún atiende entrenamiento de fútbol todas las mañanas.
También dice que cuenta con el apoyo completo de sus padres hacia sus aspiraciones igual que de su mentores y profesores en la escuela. Cuando le pregunté que como él mantiene un equilibrio entre la escuela y el deporte, respondió “solo me enfoco y intento luchar por mi sueño.” A pesar de tener poco tiempo para conversar con Marco, es muy evidente que es un ser humano muy humilde y me sorprendió demasiado. Viéndolo entrenar con los demás, me di cuenta que no solamente tiene mucha disciplina pero que también es muy determinado.
Farfan ha hecho un nombre para sí mismo por ser un muchacho de 18 años jugando profesionalmente para el equipo de los Portland Timbers. Es un sueño de la mayoría de los muchachos ser pagado por hacer algo que ama y Marco lo ha logrado. Semanas antes de mi entrevista con Marco, el había arrancado un juego contra LA Galaxy. No mencionó estar nervioso, solo dijo “fue divertido”
Al concluir mi tiempo con él le hice una última pregunta. ¿Qué es un consejo que les darías a los demás? El respondió,“ no te dejes distraer, enfócate en lo que haces para que estés listo para la siguiente etapa.”
