The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
I recently had the opportunity to interview one of the most dominant center defensive midfielders in the MLS, Portland Timbers veteran Diego Chara. During my time with him I decided to go deeper into the shaping of his career, and how as a Timber he has been able to learn and grow as a player, and person.
Diego grew up admiring the strong play of French international Claude Makelele. With great character and leadership skills, Chara found himself looking in a mirror at a young age. Although he was originally a striker, he decided he wanted a more involved role in the game thus he pursued the position of a central defensive midfielder. “Strikers aren't too involved as they wait for the ball up the field most of the game, I wanted to be on every touch of the ball and wanted to be around the play as much as I can.”
At the age of 13, Diego’s older brother, Felipe Chara, became a professional soccer player. Diego admired the hard work his brother put into becoming the player he was. When asked how he did the same for his younger brother Yimmi he simply replied, “I just wanted to motivate him to working the best he can.”
Diego’s move to the United States in 2011 came with barriers. He faced language barriers with his teammates and coaches. The change in culture also became an issue as he was unable to socialize as he did back at home. Fortunately the team now has more Colombians with the likes of Dairon Asprilla and Victor Arboleda. Apart from this though he faced a different style of play as the MLS was “faster and more physical,” he quickly adapted and continued to dominate as he did in Colombia.
Now being a veteran for Portland he has learned a lot from each one of his teammates as they all have something that makes them special. I was able to talk to him about his first goals for the club against the Sounders back in the 2014 season and he told me about how special that was for him scoring against our local rivals, and on his 28th birthday.
Diego Chara has been such an influential player in the Timbers organization and the cup run of 2015. He has shown up time after time and that is why he will forever live on in the Timbers Army.

Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.
Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de entrevistar a uno de los medios defensivos más dominantes de la MLS, el veterano de los Portland Timbers Diego Chara. Decidí conocer cómo se desarrolló como jugador y en cuáles formas a mejorado y aprendido durante su tiempo con los Timbers.
Cuando era niño, Diego admiraba el fuerte estilo de jugador que tenía el francés Claude Makelele. Con su gran carácter y habilidad de ser líder Diego se veía en la forma de Makelele desde una edad temprana. Aunque al principio de su carrera Diego fue delantero, decidio que queria estar mas involucrado en el partido asi es que decidió jugar la posición que hoy en dia juega. “Los delanteros no son tan involucrados ya que usualmente esperan el balón en el otro lado de la cancha. Yo quise tener cada toque del balón y estar en cada jugada.”
A los 13 años el hermano mayor de Diego, Felipe Chara, llegó a ser profesional. Para Diego esto fue admirable al ver como el desempeño de su hermano Felipe le ayudó lograr su meta. Cuando le pregunté a Diego como él ayudó a su hermano menor Yimmi para llegar a ser profesional el simplemente me dijo que, “ yo solo lo motive a producir lo mejor de el mismo.”
Cuando primero se mudó a los Estados Unidos, Diego se enfrentó con varios problemas. Se presentó con barreras de comunicación con sus compañeros y entrenadores. Aparte de eso él no pudo convivir de la manera en la que lo solía hacer en casa. Afortunadamente el equipo ha inaugurado más talento colombiano, como Dairon Asprilla y Victor Arboleda. Otro problema que tuvo que enfrentar fue el cambio de estilo de juego, “el cambio fue difícil ya que el estilo de la MLS fue más rápido y fuerte.” Lo superó rápidamente y continuó a dominar en la forma en que lo hacía en Colombia.
Con las 5 temporadas en las que ha jugado con los Timbers él ha aprendido varias cosas de todos sus compañeros ya que cada jugador tiene su propio estilo de juego. Tuve la oportunidad de hablar con él sobre sus primeros goles contra los Sounders en la temporada del 2014. El me dijo que fue especial para él porque fue contra nuestros rivales locales y fue en su cumpleanos de 28 anos.
Diego Chara ha sido un jugador importante para la organización de los Timbers y la temporada del 2015 cuando ganamos la MLS Cup. Nos a demostrado partido tras partido la razón por la cual el siempre vivira en el “Timbers Army”.
