The Bilingual Reporter program is designed to encourage Hispanic youth to be proud of their heritage and language. Students are nominated by their teachers and then apply to have the opportunity to interview a Timbers player, Thorns player, or a member of the coaching staff. Following the interview, the selected students are required to write a report about the experience in English and Spanish. With a professional interview, the students are able to further develop their bilingual speaking and writing skills while exhibiting a passion for the sport.
As part of the Timbers Program, Bilingual Reporter has given me a great opportunity to interview and learn a little about Sebastian Blanco’s life. Sebastian is from Argentina and he started playing soccer since he was 4 years old. At the age of 8 he played in a league, now is in the Timbers. The motivation and passion came from his family because his family has supported him since he was a child. Now he also has the support from his wife and his daughter. He feels like since his daughter was born, he learned responsibility, to take things calmly and whatever you want to earn, you need to work for it.
Before playing for Timbers, Sebastian played with San Lorenzo in Argentina; then, he was contacted to be part of the Timbers team. The proposal interested him since he had spoken with Diego Valeri to whom he knew before. Diego told him that this was a good opportunity to grow as an athlete. He told him that Portland was a nice place for his family and that he was also going to enjoy being part of Timbers. Sebastian does not regret the decision he made. It was not easy but it was a good decision.
In addition, Sebastian played in other countries, and he said that the adaptation to the Timbers team has been very good compared to what he lived in Ukraine, England and other countries. He also mentioned that the games here are different from those in Argentina. In Argentina the games are taken as life or death, hit, constant pressure, and winning is practically obligatory. Here you live with more tranquility and more than anything is one who has the personal pressure, not off the court. Sebastian said that when he lost a game in Argentina, he did not leave his home, especially when those games were important. “Sometimes defeats hurt, but victories are joyful.”
Sebastian commented that many people think that soccer is an easy career, but no, he had to sacrifice his family to get to where he is now, losing important dates such as: weddings, birthdays, and others, due to he had to travel a lot. He also said that soccer has a positive side: to get to where you want to go, you have to go through 10 to 15 years without achieving anything in the material sense, one is a achieving mentally.
“My idol is Pablo Aimar, an Argentinian who played in the selection in many important international places, I take him as a reference, well, there’s also Lionel Messi whom I take as an Argentinian example player.” Sebastian, said. Moreover, he remembers with satisfaction several goals, mentioning one of his first goals in a championship that won at the age of 19, and some that he scored in a classic, also a goal that he scored for a cup classification. In addition, the maximum goal was one that scored in the selection of Argentina. Out of curiosity, I asked Sebastian if he uses a trick before he starts a game. He told me that he used to wear same socks, trousers or take the Argentinian mate everywhere, but not anymore. “Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t work.”
I also asked him about the tie with FC Dallas. “So, so because we didn’t win but happy because I turned it into a personal accomplishment , we added, we had two losses and it is not easy to start losing like that, knowing that we have a good team and also these draws give us confidence for what comes next.” With Chicago what do you expect. He said he expected a tie “served in confidence’’ and I admire the Timbers because through the effort they made they accomplish a tie 2-2 being Sebastian and Diego Valeri the ones who scored the goal.
To conclude, Sebastian said that his goal is to play in a league or in a top team, or play again with the selection. He also would like his daughter to be a footballer but whatever she decides to do that will make her happy. He would like her to do it with passion. He thinks a lot about his daughter and he also see that living here is also an opportunity for his daughter to learn English; this opportunity will open doors for her. Base on his experience, it has been very difficult due to the language but he is trying to learn English too. “People here deserve to feel that one is involved not only in soccer but also in culture.” He said. He also concluded with an advice for all who read this interview. “At first, it is difficult but try hard, seek for opportunities, take everything seriously, enjoy what you do, train twice and always look forward.” I learned a lot from Sebastian. He is persistent, has values, is humble, someone who loves his family and always strives for his goals, striving and doing things with responsibility. I admire Sebastian very much and I wish him the best.
Reportero Bilingüe es un programa comunitario diseñado para animar a los jóvenes de estar orgullosos de su herencia Hispana y su idioma. Los estudiantes serán nominados por sus maestros y necesitarán solicitar para tener la oportunidad de entrevistar a un jugador de los Portland Timbers, Portland Thorns, o uno de los entrenadores del Cuerpo Técnico. Después de la entrevista, los estudiantes necesitarán escribir un reportaje sobre la experiencia en inglés y español que será publicado en el sitio web de los Portland Timbers y sus redes sociales. Con una entrevista profesional, los estudiantes desarrollaran sus habilidades de escritura y lenguaje en español a la vez se estarán conectando con el deporte que les apasiona.
El programa Somos Timbers Reportero Bilingüe me ha dado la grandiosa oportunidad de entrevistar y conocer un poco sobre la vida de Sebastián Blanco. Sebastián empezó a jugar fútbol desde los 4 años y a los 8 años jugó en una liga y ahora en Timbers. La motivación y la pasión por el deporte vino de su familia, su familia lo ha apoyado desde que estaba chiquito, siempre lo acompañaban a todos lados y aún sigue teniendo el apoyo de ellos, incluyendo el de su esposa y el de su hija. Desde que su hija nació, él aprendió a ser responsable, a tomar las cosas con tranquilidad y a que las cosas se ganan solo con trabajo.
Antes de jugar para los Timbers, Sebastián jugó con el equipo San Lorenzo en Argentina, luego lo contactaron para formar parte de los Timbers, la propuesta le interesó ya que él había hablado con Diego Valeri a quien conocía con anterioridad. Diego le comentó que era una buena oportunidad para crecer como deportista, que Portland era un lugar lindo para su familia y que él también iba a disfrutar ser parte de Timbers. Sebastián no se arrepiente de la decisión que tomó, no fue fácil pero si fue una buena decisión.
Además, Sebastián jugó en otros países, él expresó que la adaptación al equipo de los Timbers ha sido muy buena comparado con lo que él vivió en Ucrania, Inglaterra y en otros países. El también mencionó que los partidos de aquí son diferentes a los de Argentina. En Argentina, el juego lo toman como vida o muerte, se pegan, la presión es constante, ganar es prácticamente obligatorio. Aquí se vive con más tranquilidad y más que todo es uno quien tiene la presión personal, no fuera de la cancha. Sebastián dijo que cuando él perdía un partido en Argentina, él no salía de su casa, mas cuando eran partidos importantes. “A veces duelen las derrotas, pero las victorias son más alegres.”
Sebastián comentó que muchos piensan que la carrera de futbolista es fácil, pero no, él tuvo que sacrificar a su familia para poder llegar a donde esta, perdiendo fechas importantes como bodas, cumpleaños y otros, debido a que tenía que viajar mucho. El también dijo que el fútbol tiene su lado positivo, pero para llegar a donde uno quiere llegar tiene que pasar entre 10 a 15 años sin lograr nada en sentido material, uno lo va logrando mentalmente.
“Mi ídolo es Pablo Aimar un Argentino que jugaba en la selección en muchos lugares importantes internacionales y lo tomo a él como referencia; pues también está Lionel Messi para tomarlo como ejemplo Argentino.” dijo Sebastián. Asi como también, él recuerda con satisfacción varios goles, mencionando uno de sus primeros goles en un campeonato que ganó a los 19 años y algunos que anotó en un clásico, también un gol que anotó para la clasificación a una copa. Además, el máximo gol fue uno que anotó en la Selección de Argentina. Por curiosidad pregunté a Sebastián si solía usar algún truco antes de iniciar el juego, él me dijo que antes solía usar las mismas medias, pantalón o llevar el mate Argentino a algún lugar, pero ahora no porque a veces funciona y a veces no.
También le pregunté sobre cómo se sintió el haber completado el empate de Timbers con FC Dallas, “A medias, porque no ganamos, pero contento porque nuevamente lo convertí en lo personal, porque sumamos, teníamos dos derrotas difíciles y no es fácil arrancar perdiendo así, sabiendo que tenemos buen equipo y que también estos empates nos dan confianza para lo que viene.” Y con Chicago Fire como crees que les vaya le dije. El me dijo que esperaba el empate ‘’servido en confianza’’. Y yo admiro a los Timbers porque se esforzaron y trabajaron duro para conseguirlo, quedando 2-2 y siendo Sebastián y Diego Valeri los que anotaron los goles.
Para concluir expresó que su objetivo es jugar en una liga o equipo superior o volver a jugar en la selección. También dijo que a él le gustaría que su hija fuera futbolista pero dijo: ‘’que sea lo que ella quiera, pero que sea feliz y que lo haga con mucha pasión’’ a Sebastián le gusta la idea de vivir aquí para que su hija tenga la oportunidad de aprender inglés desde chica porque abre muchas puertas, para él ha sido difícil pero trata de aprender porque, ’’la gente de aquí merece sentir que uno está involucrado no solo en el fútbol si no también en la cultura’’ dijo Sebastián. Para finalizar este es el consejo que envía a todas las personas que lean esta entrevista ‘’al principio es difícil pero que lo intenten, que busquen la oportunidad, que tomen seriedad, que lo disfruten, entrenar el doble y siempre para adelante’’. Yo aprendí mucho de Sebastián, es una persona persistente, con valores, humilde, que le tiene mucho amor a su familia y que siempre lucha por su objetivo, esforzándose y haciendo las cosas con responsabilidad. Lo admiro mucho y le deseo lo mejor junto a los Timbers y que sigan creciendo juntos como equipo.
