Honduran midfielder set to join the senior national team to face Cuba in pair of Concacaf Nations League matches
PORTLAND, Ore. – Timbers midfielder Bryan Acosta was called into the Honduran Men’s National Team for the FIFA international period in October, the National Autonomous Federation of Football of Honduras announced.
Acosta will join Honduras to play in a pair of Concacaf National League matches against Cuba on Oct. 12 and Oct. 15. The 29-year-old midfielder will join the senior team in the Dominican Republic after the Timbers’ away match against CF Montreal on Oct. 7. This season for Portland, Acosta has started in four of six appearances since joining in August, tallying one assist.
Acosta has made 64 appearances for the Honduras Men’s National Team. Most recently, the midfielder started in one of two appearances in Concacaf Nations League matches against Jamaica (Sept. 8) and Grenada (Sept. 12). Acosta also featured in all three of Honduras’ group stage Concacaf Gold Cup matches against Mexico (June 25), Qatar (June 29) and Haiti (July 2). The 29-year-old midfielder has appeared in 13 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, 15 Concacaf Gold Cup and Nations League matches and Copa Centroamericana. He received his first senior call up on February 26, 2014, and went on to make his debut on March 6, 2014. Additionally, Acosta played for the Honduras U-20 and U-23 teams, featuring in the 2016 U-23 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, captaining the team through all six matches played, including the bronze medal match against Nigeria.
