TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras –The Portland Timbers’ run in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League tournament came to an end with a 3-1 loss against C.D. Olimpia in the final group-stage match at Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on Tuesday night.
Portland (3-1-0, 9pts) and C.D. Olimpia (3-1-0, 9pts) finished level on total points (9) – and tied 5-5 on aggregate in their head-to-head matches – after four group games in CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) play, but C.D. Olimpia advances to the tournament’s quarterfinal round by virtue of the away goals tiebreaker. The Honduran side tallied two road goals in a 4-2 loss against Portland at Providence Park on Sept. 16, earning a 2-1 advantage in the tiebreaker over the Timbers following Tuesday’s result.
Midfielder Ben Zemanski tallied his first career CCL goal for Portland with a deflected strike from distance in the 52nd minute. Unleashing a strong shot following a pass from midfielder/defender Danny O’Rourke, Zemanski’s effort glanced off a C.D. Olimpia defender, catching goalkeeper Donis Escober out of position.
Portland conceded two goals in the opening five minutes as C.D. Olimpia forward Romell Quioto delivered a fortuitous overhead kick from the top of the penalty box that struck off the underside of the crossbar and settled in the goal just two minutes into the match, giving the home side an early advantage.
Forward Anthony Lozano netted the first of his two goals for C.D. Olimpia in the fourth minute, finishing a cross from midfielder Omar Guerra from close range. Lozano tallied his second goal of the match just minutes following Zemanski’s strike, providing what would be the decisive goal for C.D. Olimpia on another volley from close range off a cross from Quioto in the 54th minute.
The physical match featured 31 fouls and a combined 10 yellow cards, seven of which were issued to Portland.
Facing a quick turnaround, Portland closes out the MLS regular-season schedule on Saturday against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). Trailing Vancouver Whitecaps FC by just one point for the final postseason berth in the Western Conference, Portland has a chance to reach the MLS Cup Playoffs with a positive result on Saturday.
