As part of our inaugural group of ticket holders, The Axe Society, Chad and Carver won the chance to have a VIP experience for the Portland Timbers vs. Columbus Crew match, including KeyBank Club seats, and a chance to visit with Timber Joey on the field!
We asked Chad a few questions after the match.
What was your first memory of/first match supporting the Timbers?
"When I was 7 years old getting to travel downtown and see the Timbers up close, it was a great carnival atmosphere even back then. We started attending the games in ’77 regularly, even when I lived in Seattle. I was so excited when we finally moved back to Portland full time and could take in games when they were still in the USL. The fan base was smaller, but the atmosphere on game day was still passionate."
What was your favorite moment of the match tonight?
"Winning of course! Actually, getting a peek into the background of the operations of the Timbers organization and what it takes to pull off a successful game day. I did not know that that pre-game activities are scheduled in 15 second increments, which is just amazing. I also enjoyed running into Merritt Paulson and some of the players’ families in the club. For my son, the opening ceremonies, getting a huge win, and the food were some of his favorite moments."
Who would you nominate as Player of the Match?
"Lucas Melano, he worked his tail off! I think the Timbers should be looking at the marketing opportunity to partner with Pepperidge Farms and get Mint Milano packaging changed to Mint Melano (in Timbers green).
What is your prediction for the next match – Timbers versus San Jose?
"Timbers win – 2-1. You just know Wondo is going to find a way to get one off of us."
What else should we know about your Timbers fandom?
"It is a multi-generational fandom from my father taking me to games when I was a kid to my sharing this experience with my son. My favorite memorabilia are the scarfs for sure.
The experience was so great and really a memory that we will both cherish our whole lives. We appreciate having had the opportunity! I really think it should always involve a parent and child fan!"
Congratulations Chad and Carver! And thank you again for your continued support!
