Copa América 2024 opened Thursday, with Timbers goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau shining for Canada against Argentina, earning Player of the Match honors.

ATLANTA, GA – Copa América 2024 kicked off Thursday night with Canada taking on reigning World Cup champions Argentina at Mercedez-Benz Stadium.

Getting the start for Canada was Portland Timbers goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau, who held his own between the posts with eight saves and a Player of the Match performance in a 2-0 loss to Lionel Messi's Argentina.

In an entertaining first half, Crépeau recorded two crucial saves to keep the score level at halftime. Crépeau put his skills on international display in the second half, with six total saves and nine recoveries.

Timbers defender Kamal Miller was on the bench for Canada.

Crépeau, Miller, and Co. have two remaining Group Stage matches to secure advancement into the next phase of Copa América. And next up, Canada faces Peru, featuring Timbers defender Miguel Araujo, on Tuesday, June 25.
