Timbers Academy Training #2, 9.20.12

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Timbers Academy teams started a string of four consecutive home matches at the adidas Timbers Training Center on March 1-2, playing host to the San Diego Surf and Nomads on March 1-2. The Timbers U-18 and U-16 Academy teams combined for a pair of wins and a draw, taking points from all but one of the four matches on the weekend.

The Timbers U-18 Academy (8-9-2, 26pts) opened March scoring six goals in two matches, splitting the results against San Diego Surf U-18s and Nomads U-18s.


Jacob Kempf (Camas, Wash.) got the Timbers U-18s off to a blistering start against San Diego Surf U-18s on March 1, scoring in the second minute before notching his second in the 36th minute. His brace took him to four goals on the season. Peter Prescott (Vancouver, Wash.) and Samuel Werner (Beaverton, Ore.) then gave the Timbers U-18s a four goal lead with strikes in the 61st and 71st minutes, respectively, to lead Portland to a 4-1 victory.

The Timbers U-18s fought valiantly and scored first for the third game running, but fell 4-2 against Nomads U-18s on March 2. Octavio Hermosillo (Portland, Ore.) opened the scoring in the 10th minute for the home side, before Nomads U-18s equalized 10 minutes later. The first half ended all square before Nomads U-18s took the lead with three consecutive goals in a seven-minute span. Alejandro Segovia (Hillsboro, Ore.) got his name on the score sheet late in the match for his fifth goal this season.


The Timbers U-16s (4-7-8, 20pts) went unbeaten in their games against the Surf and Nomads.

The U-16 sides for the Timbers and San Diego played to a scoreless draw on March 1; it was the second clean sheet in two games and third overall on the season for the Timbers U-16s.

Two goals in three minutes from Reid Baez (Salem, Ore.) led the Timbers U-16s to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Nomads U-16s on March 2. The Timbers U-16s took the lead in the 35th minute through Kento Oudomphong (Portland, Ore.) for his first goal of the season. Nomads U-16s equalized in the 51st minute, but Baez restored the lead three minutes later with goals in the 54th and 57th minutes, with his second goal of the match holding up as the game-winning tally.

The Timbers Academy teams resume play later this month when they play host to the Santa Cruz Breakers Academy on Saturday, March 29, and De Anza Force, on Sunday, March 30 at the adidas Timbers Training Center in Beaverton, Ore. Against Santa Cruz, the U-18 sides kickoff at 12 noon (Pacific), with the U-16s teams playing at 2:30 p.m. On March 30, the Timbers U-18 play De Anza at 12 noon (Pacific), with the Timbers U-16s kicking off at 2:30 p.m.
