Chara helped the Timbers earn third consecutive clean sheet on June 17
PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for matchday 19, the league announced today. The Timbers earned their third consecutive clean sheet with a scoreless draw against San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park on Saturday, June 17.
Chara, 37, is the only Portland player that has started every match (18) and played every minute (1,620) for the Timbers this season. In the match against San Jose on June 17, the Colombian midfielder led Portland in tackles won (4), recoveries (13) and completed passes (41), recording a 95.3% passing accuracy.
Portland’s all-time leader in games played (356) and games started (351), Chara became the first field player in MLS to reach 350 starts all with one club with his start against FC Dallas on June 11. The Colombian midfielder also made his 400th appearance across all competitions for Portland in the match. D. Chara tallied his 31st regular-season assist in the June 11 match, passing Darlington Nagbe (30) for third-most in club history behind Sebastián Blanco (50) and Diego Valeri (91). He also leads the squad in tackles won (21), recoveries (119) and successful passes (575) in the 2023 campaign.
The Timbers will face a quick turnaround hosting Chicago Fire FC on Wednesday, June 21, at Providence Park.
