In the latest chapter of the historic Cascadia Cup rivalry, the Portland Timbers hosted the Seattle Sounders on a bright, shining day at Providence Park.
It was the Sounders who struck first with two counterattacking goals. The first came in the 18th minute as Seattle's Brad Evans came down the right side and crossed into Obafemi Martins. Martins tapped it in for a 1-0 Sounders lead.
The second came following a Timbers corner kick. The Sounders Clint Dempsey sped on a long run on the counter to take a pass from Martins and slip it past Donovan Ricketts.
The Sounders made it 3-0 following Chad Barrett's goal.
The Timbers pulled one back though in the 73rd minute. Second half Portland subs Rodney Wallace and Fanendo Adi connected after Wallace played a pinpoint cross to the striker who thumped it home.
But coming back the other way, Seattle jumped up with another goal via the second of the day from Martins.
Portland continued to push to the very end. In second half stoppage time, Adi had his second after pouncing on a lose ball in the box to make it 4-2.
