Costa Rica enteres the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup as one of the hottest teams in the last year. Having only lost once in their last 15 matches (a 1-0 defeat in a snowy battle vs. the USMNT), La Sele will face a Cuban side that has had limited recent success, primarily in the Caribbean Cup that they won to qualify for the Gold Cup. Prior to the Caribbean Cup, Cuba hadn't won a game since a May 2011 friendly vs. Nicaragua.
TICKETS: Costa Rica vs. Cuba & USMNT vs. Belize at JELD-WEN Field
Costa Rica and Cuba will face off at JELD-WEN Field at 5:30pm PT on July 9th, marking their fifth Gold Cup match up since the competition began in 1991. Costa Rica has won the other four by convincing margins. Overall, the two sides have met 16 times total, with Costa Rica winning 11, Cuba winning once, and the other four matches resulting in a draw.
The Portland Timbers' Rodney Wallace is part of the Ticos side who will be playing on his MLS home turf at JELD-WEN Field. Wallace and his teammates are looking to improve on recent success, choosing to forget about their prior Gold Cup performances and focus on the success the team has had lately.
As for Cuba, the team is determined to establish themselves as a World Cup contender, starting with a successful run in the Gold Cup.
Each team will look to get off to a strong start in Group C tonight before facing both Belize and the group favorite United States.
