While coaching an National Women's Soccer League Championship team can bring great joy, Thorns FC Head Coach Cindy Parlow Cone also strives to spread the joy of soccer across the world. This winter through Goals for Girls, an international initiative of girls helping girls through the game of soccer, Cone will travel with seven local soccer players (ages 16-18) to India to work with 120 Indian girls (ages 9-15) from impoverished and leprosy affected communities. The girls will be involved in service projects, soccer and life-skills activities that focus on promoting self-esteem, leadership and cooperation in an all-female environment.
Goals for Girls connects girls from around the world through cultural exchange, service, teamwork, and life skills education. All of which is taught through the game of soccer. This winter will be the first campaign to India while past campaigns have included groups of girls travelling to Peru, Tajikistan, South Africa, and Uganda.
“Goals for Girls connects girls from the US with disadvantaged girls from various countries and backgrounds in a program that uses soccer to address social and health challenges many girls face around the world," said Cone. "The Goals for Girls program is all about girls helping girls and it is the only program I have ever been a part of where I am literally able to watch girls’ lives change before my eyes.”
