Despite a magical 2013 season that saw the Portland Timbers produce the best record in the Western Conference and an end-of-season haul of numerous MLS awards, the Timbers' playoff exit to Real Salt Lake in the 2013 MLS Cup Playoffs left many feeling a bit sad.
For Timbers Army season ticket holder Allen Schmitz, watching the second leg 1-0 loss was particularly hard to take. Captured on the ESPN2 broadcast bravely cheering on his team in the game's dying moments while tears streamed down his cheeks, Schmitz awoke on Monday morning to find that an enterprising fan had taken that clip and set it to R.E.M.'s classic "Everybody Hurts" on YouTube.
The passion and heartbreak was a feeling shared by many and word of this newly named "Timbers Cry Guy" clip spread across the web including a feature on MLSsoccer.com.
Timbers Army raconteur and Off Pitch host Hermes wanted to make sure Schmitz was okay. In this exclusive interview, Hermes returns to talk with Timbers Cry Guy about that night, the video and how, in the end, all Timbers fans can take the wealth of positives from the breakthrough 2013 season into an exciting 2014 campaign.
That, and ice cream always helps.
