The Portland Timbers battled the Chicago Fire to a 1-1 draw before 14,729 fans at Toyota Park on May 28. Midfielder Diego Valeri recorded his fifth goal of the season for the Timbers, who improved to 4-0-3 all-time against Chicago in remaining undefeated against the Fire since joining MLS in 2011. Attacking early in the game, Portland opened the scoring in the 18th minute of play after the Fire’s defense struggled to clear the ball away on the edge of their 18-yard box, with Valeri fighting to win possession before curling his effort past Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson from the end line. Two minutes later, Chicago man- aged to level the score when a deep cross into the box found forward Kennedy Igboananike, who played the ball across the face of goal to forward David Accam for a close-range finish.

Dating back to 1975, the Timbers have compiled an 18-11-7 record against the San Jose Earthquakes in all competitions, including a mark of 6-2-7 in MLS matches. Since joining MLS in 2011, the Timbers have produced an eight-game unbeaten streak against the Earthquakes at Providence Park (5-0-3). Portland and San Jose have met twice so far in 2016, with the two teams splitting the season series with one win apiece. After falling 2-1 to San Jose at Avaya Stadium on March 13, the Timbers responded with a commanding 3-1 victory at Providence Park on April 16, as forwards Fanendo Adi and Jack McInerney provided all three goals for Portland during the win with Adi recoriding his 11th brace since joining the Timbers in 2014.

Sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference, the San Jose Earthquakes are unbeaten in their last three league matches since falling to Seattle Sounders FC at Century Link Field on May 7, defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-1, and drawing LA Galaxy 1-1 and FC Dallas 0-0 most recently.
