SAN JOSE, Calif. - Making their first-ever trip to Avaya Stadium, the Portland Timbers recorded their ninth shutout of the season – tied for the most in MLS – to claim a point on the road in a scoreless draw against the San Jose Earthquakes in front of 18,000 fans in San Jose, Calif.

Picking up a point on the road, Portland (9-8-6, 33pts) moves up to fifth place in the Western Conference standings and is just one point off the pace of fourth-place Sporting Kansas City (34pts) and four points behind the LA Galaxy (37pts) in third place.
The Timbers held a 10-5 edge in shots in the second half as forward Fanendo Adi unleashed a powerful shot from close range less than two minutes into the half that rattled the inside of the left post after receiving a pass from midfielder Diego Valeri.
Amid a flurry of chances late in the match, Valeri found Adi once again with a pass near the edge of the box in the 66th minute. Adi turned and fired a curling shot around two defenders, missing just wide of the right post.
Remaining on the front foot, Valeri was fouled by defender Shaun Francis inside the box, drawing a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Valeri stepped to the spot to attempt the kick, but his shot ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play before it was cleared away. Just moments before the penalty kick, forward Lucas Melano, appearing in his second MLS match, hit a one-time shot from close range off a cross by midfielder Rodney Wallace that was saved by San Jose goalkeeper David Bingham.
Defensively, Portland limited San Jose (7-9-5, 26pts) to three shots on goal in the match, including one attempt on frame in the final 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey registered his MLS-leading ninth shutout of the season. Kwarasey finished the match with three saves, including a critical kick save in the seventh minute on a close range attempt from midfielder Chris Wondolowski.
The Timbers return to the Rose City for a home game against Eastern Conference side the Chicago Fire on Friday, Aug. 7, at Providence Park; kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. (Pacific). The match against the Fire will be broadcast live nationally on UniMás with the UniMás broadcast also simulcast locally in English on KPDX Channel 49.
