PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers won their third-straight match thanks to an early goal from forward Felipe Mora to defeat Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park Sunday night.
Goalkeeper Steve Clark made three saves and the Timbers defense earned their second straight clean sheet.
5' - GOAL (POR) - Portland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on an ace set piece. Midfielder Eryk Williamson curled in a free kick from just outside the right corner of the Vancouver 18-yard box that forward Felipe Mora expertly headed down inside the right post.
17' - CHANCE (POR) - Mora and Williamson combined again for a good chance later in the first half. A ball over the top was chested down by Mora for the on-rushing Williamson who volleyed a skipping shot along the turf but Vancouver goalkeeper Bryan Meredith made the save.
38' - BLOCK (POR) - Vancouver threatened the Portland goal with some sustained pressure. A cross in from Whitecaps defender Andy Rose was punched out by Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark but only as far as forward Fredy Montero at the edge of the area. Montero teed up a shot but Timbers defender Dario Zuparic slid back in front and made a key block.
40' - SAVE (POR) - A minute later, Vancouver midfielder Ali Adnan chipped in a ball that found Montero at the penalty spot. He headed his shot on frame but Clark made a quick reaction save.
69' - CHANCE (POR) - The Timbers played forward centrally with Cristian Paredes then spraying a ball out left to Andy Polo. Polo settled it and then fired a low shot that Meredith saved and covered.
74' - SAVE (POR) - A ball forward by Vancouver fell in behind the Timbers defense and on to the run of Cristian Dájome. Clark raced off his line to the edge of the 18-yard box and headed the ball into safety.
79' - CHANCE (POR) - The Timbers patiently worked the ball around the left channel in the Vancouver end. Pablo Bonilla, with his back to goal, tapped a ball back to Yimmi Chara who then hit his shot just wide of the left post.
85' - CHANCE (POR) - On a Timbers corner kick, Jaroslaw Niezgoda headed a ball towards the back post that Meredith barely managed to knock away.
87' - CHANCE (POR) - Yimmi Chara stole the ball in his own end and sped forward. He played the ball upfield to Diego Valeri who charged ahead while Chara came on the overlap. Valeri played to Chara who took a low shot that was saved.
90+3' - CHANCE (POR) - led by Yimmi Chara, Portland broke out on a counter attack after a Vancouver corner attempt. Chara went right up the gut before playing the ball out to brother Diego Chara on his right. Diego settled it, played it to Valeri at the top of the box who picked the lower left corner but Meredith made a diving stop.
