PORTLAND, OR – Nike was crowned champions in all three divisions at the 2012 Portland Timbers Corporate Cup with wins in the Men's Competitive, Mens' Recreational, and Coed divisions. The final matches took place on Saturday, August 18 at the Timbers’ home pitch, JELD-WEN Field.
The second annual adult soccer tournament, benefitting Portland Timbers' Pillar Partner, Portland YouthBuilders (PYB), kicked off with a social event at Kells Irish Restaurant & Pub. Teams enjoyed food, drinks, raffles and the opportunity to mingle with Timber Joey as well as Timbers players Joe Bendik and Eric Brunner.
On Aug. 10 and 11, a host of Pacific Northwest companies including adidas, Alaska Airlines, CMD Agency, Lompoc Brewing, Microsoft, Nike, Providence Health and Services, Tursi’s Soccer Supply, Widmer Brothers and Wieden + Kennedy all competed in qualifying play at the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreational District’s Howard M. Terpenning Complex.
After a weekend of impressive play, Nike dominated the brackets and sent teams to face off in the championship against Tursi’s Soccer Supplies (Coed), Lompoc Brewing (Men’s Competitive), and Widmer Brother’s (Men’s Recreational) respectively.
Six teams arrived at JELD-WEN Field motivated to bring gold back to their companies. Over 500 fans were treated to three spectacular games that left them on the edge of their seats.
Championship play started at 9am with the Coed Final. After 90 minutes, Tursi’s and Nike (above) were tied 3-3 forcing penalty kicks to determine the winner. Tursi’s was unable to defend their 2011 title and lost to Nike 4-3 in the shootout.
At 11am Nike and Lompoc Brewing went head-to-head in the finals of the Men’s Competitive bracket. Their match was also decided by penalty kicks after finishing regulation and overtime with a 1-1 tie. In the end, a narrow 2-1 PK result earned Nike their second victory of the day.
In the last match of the day, Nike defeated Widmer Brother’s 2-0 to become the winners of the Men’s Recreational division and sweep all three brackets of the tournament.
The Portland Timbers Corporate Cup is the biggest fundraiser for PYB, a non-profit helping low-income youth make long-term positive changes in their lives through education, vocational training, leadership development and personalized counseling. All proceeds from the event, including entry fees, game admission and raffle tickets were donated to PYB.
