On Wednesday, July 24, the Portland Timbers will host Norwich City FC of the Barclays Premier League (8pm PT, TICKETS). The 111-year-old English club will end their offseason United States tour at JELD-WEN Field before returning to Norwich to prepare for the Premier League season.
Founded in 1902, Norwich City was one of the founding members of the Premier League, finishing third in the inaugural 1992-93 Premier League season. The following season, Norwich City made their first appearance in the UEFA Cup. They defeated Bayern Munich 3-2 on aggregate in the second round, including a 2-1 win at in Munich. This marked the only time a British team has defeated Bayern Munich at Olympic Stadium. They went on to lose to eventual champions Inter Milan in the third round.
Known commonly as the Canaries, the team has played their home matches at the historic Carrow Road grounds since 1935. Carrow Road is an all-seater facility with a capacity of 27,000. Built in just 82 days, Carrow Road was the largest construction project in Norwich at the time since the construction of Norwich Castle.
The Canaries made their most recent return to the Premier League in 2011, after a six-year absence. They are the first team since Manchester City in 2000 to earn back-to-back promotions, climbing from the third division in 2009 to the Premier League in 2011.
Norwich City finished the 2012-13 campaign in 11th place in the Premier League, thanks in part to a ten-game unbeaten streak that included wins over Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United.
The match against the Portland Timbers will be their final match in the United States before returning to England. The Canaries traveling squad includes many of their most notable names including several recent additions.
Kickoff on Wednesday is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. PDT. Tickets are still available here.
