On Tuesday morning, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, who has represented the 3rd district of Oregon since 1996, delivered a speech congratulating the Portland Timbers on Sunday's 2-1 MLS Cup victory over Columbus Crew SC.
“I come to the Floor this morning barely able to talk, but not having much of a voice is common in Portland, Oregon, these days as fans shouted themselves hoarse after the Portland Timbers’ stunning victory over the Columbus Crew on Sunday," Blumenauer began, adding, "There is no doubt that my hometown of Portland, Oregon, is Soccer City USA! Fans continue to prove the point with a huge celebration today."
Blumenauer spoke of the resilience of this Timbers team and praised head coach Caleb Porter for the job he did guiding the team to its first championship in franchise history. He even reserved a few words for the 2011 originals: Diego Chara,Jake Gleeson,Jack Jewsbury, Darlington Nagbeand Rodney Wallace.
The speech ends on a stirring note: "Mr. Speaker, let me conclude by reminding all of America – and several places in Canada – that in case you didn’t get the hint with Timber Joey and his chainsaw, there is No Pity in the Rose City!"
No pity indeed.
