PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers will face Los Angeles FC at Banc of California Stadium in the quarterfinal of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, July 18, it was determined today after LAFC defeated USL side Sacramento Republic FC 3-2 at home in the Round of 16 on Wednesday night. The Timbers’ first road match of their 2018 U.S. Open Cup campaign will begin at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
The Timbers advanced to the quarterfinal for the third time in the last six seasons after defeating the LA Galaxy 1-0 at Providence Park on June 15. Midfielder Sebastián Blanco scored the game-winning goal in the first half for Portland, recording his first goal in the U.S. Open Cup since joining the Timbers in 2017. With the win, the Timbers have posted a 9-6 record in the U.S. Open Cup since joining MLS in 2011, including the team’s deepest run in the annual competition in 2013, reaching the semifinals against Real Salt Lake.
The July 18 contest will mark the third meeting between Portland and LAFC across all competitions this season, with Portland taking a 2-1 win over LAFC at Providence Park on May 19. Both teams are scheduled to face each other at Banc of California Stadium in regular-season action on July 15.
