PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers will face Sporting Kansas City in the fifth round of the 2014 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, June 24, at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan. The match is scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific).
Portland advanced to the fifth round of the tournament for a second straight year on Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over USL Premier Development League (PDL) side Orlando City U23s at Providence Park. Forward Gastón Fernández registered a first-half brace and rookie defender Taylor Peay scored his first professional goal in his Timbers debut.
Sporting Kansas City advanced to the fifth round of the tournament with a 2-0 win over NASL club Minnesota United FC on Wednesday night at Sporting Park. The defending MLS Cup champions, Sporting Kansas City played the final 40 minutes with a man advantage and received goals from Soony Saad and Alex Martinez in the win.
Last year, the Timbers reached the U.S. Open Cup semifinal round for the first time in the team’s history across all eras.
Portland and Sporting Kansas City will face each other twice in a four-day span, as the Timbers play host to Sporting Kansas City on Friday, June 27, at Providence Park to resume regular-season play following the FIFA World Cup break.
