Portland Timbers name Adin Brown goalkeeper coach

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced the addition of Adin Brown as the club’s goalkeeper coach. An MLS veteran, Brown played for the Timbers during the team’s second-division and MLS eras.

Brown, 37, enters his first season as the Timbers goalkeeper coach, previously serving as a coach at the collegiate level at the University of Portland in 2014. As an accomplished goalkeeper with a 13-year professional career playing in Norway and MLS, Brown originally joined the Timbers for the 2010 season and started Portland’s first-ever MLS match on March 19, 2011, against the Colorado Rapids.

“We are pleased to announce Adin as our new goalkeeping coach,” said Caleb Porter, head coach of the Timbers. “His extensive experience playing overseas in Norway and in Major League Soccer will serve our current goalkeepers well. His connection to Portland and the Timbers makes him an ideal fit to seamlessly make the transition to our coaching staff.”

A three-time All-American at William & Mary, Brown began his professional playing career with the Rapids in 2000 when he was the No. 3 overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft. Brown, who appeared in 85 games in his MLS career, also spent time with the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New England Revolution, helping guide the Revolution to the MLS Cup final in 2002 and earning the team’s Defender of the Year honor twice.

“I have always been proud to be a part of the Timbers family, and I am thankful for this opportunity to join the coaching staff and contribute to the club’s continued success,” said Brown, who also has served as a Community Ambassador and radio play-by-play analyst for the club following his retirement as a player after the 2011 season. “I know I have big shoes to fill with Mike Toshack preceding me, but I am very much looking forward to getting started; we have a great group of goalkeepers and I am excited to start working with them.”

Prior to joining the Timbers in 2010, Brown played four years in Norway from 2005-09 with Aalesunds FK, becoming a finalist for the Adeccoligaen Player of the Year in 2006 and helping the club make its return to the country's premier league in 2007. In 2008, Brown was voted one of the 50 best foreign players ever to play in Norway..

The Pleasant Hill, Calif., native succeeds former Timbers goalkeeper coach Mike Toshack, who recently accepted the position of men’s soccer head coach at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Adin and his wife, Elisabeth, reside in Portland.
