LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. – As spring comes into bloom across Portland, so too does the ever popular high school prom season. Students across the city are busy figuring out their plans and the ever important question of who they will ask to join them.
For Lakeridge High School senior Nick Rooney, captain of the boys varsity soccer team, he had a particular plan to ask classmate and captain of the girls varsity soccer team, Erin Elliott. But Rooney needed a little help.
Enter Portland Timbers center back Nat Borchers.
Borchers arrived at the school Monday to give a speech to a class about setting and achieving goals. He selected Erin from the group and asked her to see how many times she could juggle a soccer ball. As a reward, Borchers signed the jersey but added an extra message of, “Erin, will you go to the prom with Nick?”
Erin, surprised and happy, said yes.

Borchers’ involvement came as part of a special request while supporting AC Portland, one of the Timbers Stand Together community partners. AC Portland works with kids across the region to succeed in life and school through youth soccer.
At a recent fundraiser for the organization that Borchers attended, Rooney’s mother asked him that if she made a donation to AC Portland, would the defender help Nick with his proposal. Borchers agreed to the plan and Monday proved to be a success.
