The Portland Timbers played two 45-minute training matches on Wednesday, the second day of their 10-day preseason (presented by Old Trapper Beef Jerky) trip to Tucson, Arizona. The Timbers lost their first match, 2-0, to the Colorado Rapids in the day's 11:00 a.m. PT kickoff and defeated Phoenix Rising FC, 1-0, in the 1:00 p.m. PT match.
Portland's best chance of Tuesday's opening match came just past the period's midpoint when Academy striker Tego Iboka's shot from just inside Colorado's penalty area hit the Rapids' crossbar and bounced back into play.
By that time, Colorado held a 1-0 lead thanks to former FC Dallas attacker Michael Barrios, with fellow former FCD player Kellyn Acosta doubling the Rapids' lead later in the match.
In the day's second game, a Phoenix own goal, forced by a throughball from Timbers midfielder Diego Valeri, proved decisive, giving the Timbers a split from their first two matches in Tucson.
Portland returns to the Kino Sports Complex field on Saturday, March 20, for a second match against Rising FC.
