PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers and adidas unveiled the club’s official new secondary Rose City jersey and retro-inspired third jersey for the 2014 MLS season as part of a special Season Kick-Off Event tonight in downtown Portland.
Timbers players Darlington Nagbe and Diego Valeri revealed the new secondary and third kits, respectively, as part of a fashion show, which featured other Timbers players modeling new clothing and merchandise items for the upcoming season. The event featured a full-team appearance and offered fans an exclusive opportunity to purchase the new looks.
Portland’s new secondary and third jerseys will be available for purchase by the public starting Tuesday at the adidas Timbers Team Store at Providence Park and the team store at Pioneer Place in downtown Portland as well as online.
Inspired by the rich red tones of a rose, the Timbers’ new secondary Rose City kit features a black-to-red fade down the front and back panels, accentuated by rows of thorns etched into the shirt to create the fade. Featuring adidas’ adizero technology as the lightest jersey made, the new secondary kit is highlighted by a metallic black and red Timbers crest on the left chest, while a metallic Rose City logo on the jock tag pays tribute to Portland’s nickname as the “City of Roses.”
The secondary jersey features the popular slogan, “No Pity in the Rose City,” in the neck tape and the word mark for the Timbers’ community outreach platform, Stand Together, is prominently placed on the back of the neck. The modern look is complemented by a metallic silver logo of jersey partner Alaska Airlines on the front and metallic silver lettering and numbers on the back.
The third jersey takes inspiration from the Timbers’ historic kits of the 1970s and a gives a nod to a popular supporter song. Featuring a dark green jersey with a gold collar and gold trim, the retro-inspired design is complemented by the club’s history-inspired secondary crest, while the chant “And When I Go Make Sure I’m Wearing Green and Gold,” is prominently placed in the neck tape. The Alaska Airlines name on the front of the shirt features a sans serif typeface, identical to the script featured by the airline in the late 1970s.
The jock tag of the third kit, also featuring adizero technology, features the letters “RCTID,” representing the mantra of the Timbers’ passionate supporters, “Rose City ‘Til I Die.” The logo for Stand Together, a set of crossed axes, highlights the back of the neck, which is made of Clima Cool mesh, the same material featured on adidas’ national team kits for 2014 FIFA World Cup.
All 19 MLS clubs will debut at least one new jersey ahead of the start of the 2014 regular season this weekend. The Timbers kick off the regular season Saturday, March 8, as they play host to the Philadelphia Union at Providence Park at 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
