TUCSON, Ariz. – In their first preseason match of the 2018 campaign, the Portland Timbers recorded a 0-0 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes at the Kino Sports Complex in the first of two preseason matches for the Timbers during the team’s first phase of preseason training in Tucson, Ariz.
Game format
The Timbers’ opening match of the 2018 preseason campaign against the Earthquakes featured three, 30-minute periods, as both teams opened their preseason slate for the 2018 MLS season. For the Timbers side, 26 players saw the field in the preseason opener, helping to produce a clean sheet in the team’s first exhibition match in the new year.
New faces
Six signed players made their preseason debuts for the Timbers in the 0-0 draw against San Jose, including defenders Julio Cascante, Modou Jadama, Larrys Mabiala and Bill Tuiloma and midfielders Andrés Flores and Eryk Williamson.
Key chances
Despite the 0-0 final score, Portland produced several key goal-scoring opportunities throughout the match, including a penalty kick from forward Fanendo Adi that was saved by goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell in the third minute of play. The Timbers came close to scoring again in the 11th minute when midfielder David Guzmán’s long-range effort just missed the top corner, while midfielder Diego Valeri narrowly missed the target from close range with five minutes remaining in the opening period.

Next up, the Timbers will begin play in the 2018 Mobile Mini Sun Cup when the team faces Cascadia-rival Seattle Sounders FC at the Kino Sports Complex on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. (Pacific), closing out their first of two preseason training camps in Tucson.
