“When did you know?” For years, players from Portland’s 2015 champion have been asked that question, in various forms. While their answers tend to be all over the place – from “I always knew we were good” to “in MLS, you never know” – October 18’s eruption at the LA Galaxy is often cited as an omen. Visiting the league’s defending champions, the eventual champions unleashed a five-goal performance that began changing two perceptions. For the Galaxy, their run as MLS’ standard-bearers was over; and for the Timbers, a talented and dangerous team was about to show they were something more.
Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders FC | MLS Cup Playoffs second leg, 3-2 win | Nov. 7, 2013
The 2013 season was a wakeup call for Seattle, the last alarms of which were delivered by the team’s fiercest rivals. On the ascent since joining MLS in 2009, Seattle stumbled in 2013, finishing with an even goal difference after posting a plus-18 the previous season. Their reward was a semifinal matchup with the West’s top seed, the Timbers, whose leg-one victory at CenturyLink Field already felt like a crushing blow. Five days later, when the series shifted south, that feeling came to full fruition, with first-half goals from Will Johnson and Diego Valeri extinguishing Seattle’s faint hopes.
FC Dallas vs. Timbers | MLS Cup Playoffs Western Conference Championship second leg | Nov. 29, 2015
If October 18, 2015, gave the Timbers reason to dream, November 29’s saw the first of those dreams come true. Carrying a 3-1 lead to Frisco, Texas, after FC Dallas’ visit to Portland, the Timbers were the first to break through, with an early second-half goal from Fanendo Adi removing one of the boogeyman from the equation: the deficit in away goals. Dallas, a team that would go on to win a Shield-Open Cup double in 2016, fought back with goals from Ryan Hollingshead and Blas Pérez, creating the platform for two of the more memorable moments in Timbers history: Nat Borchers’ late block on Pérez, and Lucas Melano’s byline-hugging goal.
