You’ve been a huge part of the success of the Canada Women’s National Team, captaining the team in so many big games. What does it mean to you that Canada will be hosting next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup?
“I’m very excited. Not many players get to play at home in a World Cup. The country has really rallied behind our team and the sport of women’s soccer ever since the London 2012 Olympics. I can’t wait to bring that to Canada and for them to get an opportunity to see the best players in the world live. It’s going to be incredible.”
Looking back on your days at the University of Portland and now playing with Thorns FC. What have been a few of your favorite moments playing in the Rose City?
“I have to say the No. 1 highlight for me was winning the first national championship with the University of Portland for Clive Charles. That ended up being the last game he ever coached. Just seeing him hugging the championship trophy is a moment I’ll never forget. Walking out onto the field for every game, every practice, I see his name up in the rafters and it’s a reminder. It’s been pretty cool to be able to spend most of my career here in Portland.”
The English Premier League season kicks off this weekend, and you’re a Liverpool fan. How did you become a Liverpool supporter?
“I actually have no idea. My whole family are Manchester United fans. There’s just something about Liverpool growing up that I just fell in love with. Steven Gerrard is my all-time favorite player and back in the day when Michel Owen was in his prime playing for Liverpool. There’s something about them as a club. I’ve never been one of those that just jumps on the Manchester United bandwagon, or now, the Manchester City bandwagon. I stick with Liverpool and I will for my whole life.”
The home match against Houston on Aug. 3 saw an NWSL record 19,123 fans in attendance. How special is it to play in a city where the fans are so passionate?
“It’s an honor to play for the Thorns and Timbers organization. I feel lucky that I get to be a part of it. I wish that all the other teams in the league had the same experiences that we, as Thorns players, have. Knowing that at every home game we’re going to have between 10,000-20,000 people is incredible. The fans truly are what make this place so special. They make the experience. It’s just been incredible and I just want to say ‘thank you’ to them for supporting us.”
