Portland tied against Columbus last weekend, scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes of the game – including one by Gastón Fernández in the 85th minute – to save a point at Providence Park. After a three-game home stand, the Timbers head out on the road to take on the New York Red Bulls, who stand at fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 14 points in 12 games (4pm PT, ROOT SPORTS).
8,572Jack Jewsbury has done it. During Saturday’s match against the Columbus Crew, the Timbers defender became Portland’s all-time leader in MLS minutes played at 8,572, passing teammate Diego Chara in the process. Even more surprising? Jewsbury is just 7th on the Timbers roster in minutes played in 2014.
Gastón Fernández scored the equalizer against Columbus Crew last Saturday.
FiveGastón Fernández leads the team with five goals this season - four of which have tied the game. Three of those goals have come in the final 15 minutes of play, including one in the 94th minute against Philadelphia in the season-opening match. It’s not all been late-game heroics, either. Fernández’ goal against D.C. United on May 3 was the fastest in Timbers MLS history, scoring just 34 seconds into the match.
5/19/13 It’s safe to say the Red Bulls don’t fancy the month of May, especially when it comes to home games. In the last four seasons, New York have just four home wins in May, with none of them coming late in the month. Since 2011, New York’s latest win at home during the month of May came on May 19, 2013 when they beat the LA Galaxy, 1-0.
107 + 102Darlington Nagbe and Thierry Henry are two of the most exciting players in MLS and on Saturday each will potentially add yet another match to their 100-plus MLS appearances. Henry reached 100 matches in the league earlier this month. Nagbe, meanwhile, reached 100 games back in April, and if he plays against New York it will be his 107th career game, all in a Timbers uniform.
1,000 The quest for the millennium mark is on. Will Johnson (989) Darlington Nagbe (967) and Diego Valeri (918) all have a chance to break 1000 minutes played in the 2014 MLS season in Harrison, New Jersey on Saturday.
