Though the fall rains came to Portland, that did not stop Timbers players, staff and teams of volunteers from contributing to projects across Portland For Stand Together week. Teams helped out at Habitat for Humanity, Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI), the Oregon Food Bank, and more.

What were you doing out here today?
We are here with Habitat for Humanity and we are helping build a couple homes in Hillsboro.
What was the most rewarding aspect of the day?
To see the progress and watch as a house is being built and know that it’s going to help out a family. It’s pretty rewarding.
I think all of us, when we can chip in a couple of hours of our time to help out—the hours start to build up—and the community as a whole becomes a better place.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of it?
Being able to participate and give back a little bit of time and effort for the day.
Because as a community we all have to put our efforts in together to make Portland a better place.

What’s going on today?
We’re at OMSI with the Portland Timbers and Hands On for Stand Together Week volunteers doing activities: fish printing, finger printing, and dye detectives. They’re themed to the different halls and labs we have here at the museum. In front of you is fish printing which connects arts and crafts activities with our science playground. Also the fish printing activity demonstrates some of the activities we have in our watershed lab in the earth science hall.
Anything you want to say about the volunteers coming in?
This is a great help. It’s very busy as it’s the first wet day of the season which means our visitors doubles, triples…If you came yesterday, there was a huge difference in how many people were here. It’s also a public school holiday so it’s really great to have some extra activities for people to do in the labs when the exhibit halls may be full or crowded.

What were you out doing today?
I’ve been taking fingerprints and I’m not in a police station. I’ve been doing fish painting and it’s fantastic to be out here OMSI and be part of the Stand Together Week project.
What was the most rewarding part of the day?
Somebody putting paint all over my hands and asking me to paint a face. It’s good. It’s really good that we can get close to the community. The kids have come in and the parents have been fantastic so it’s really good to give something back to the community.
The supporters are the bedrock of the club and everybody at the organization works extremely hard to produce winning results and a club that the supporters can be proud of. Likewise, we need to give back to them as they come out and support us every week. It’s important that they feel a part of our club.
Is OMSI and science something that appeals to you as a father?
I think it’s good. I have a son who is eight years old. Being a part of this and being able to interact with kids is sort of something I have to do naturally because of him. The thing about today is, he can go wherever he wants and to be fair, he’s really enjoying it because he’s getting to look at absolutely everything here. It’s fantastic.

It’s just really rewarding to be here today because you’re giving even just a small amount of your time can make such a huge difference in the community and it’s great to do it with other organizations.

We did a couple hours a Northwest Children’s Center and a couple hours here at the Food Bank. We had a good time sorting food.

I came to Oregon Food Bank today with Stand Together and the Timbers to sort billions of pounds of carrots it seemed like, but the team from a bunch of different places put it all together in ten pound bags just one at a time. Go Timbers!
