The Portland Timbers rolled past CD Marathón Tuesday night at Providence Park with a 5-0 blowout in Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League play. Yimmi Chara led the way with the second hat trick in the club's MLS era and also the second hat trick by an MLS player in SCCL history. Here are three key #StatMan takeaways from #PORvMAR.
11 Yimmi Chara became just the 11th player in Portland's 46-year history to score three or more goals in a single match. Chara is the first Timbers player to notch a hat trick since Frederic Piquionne scored four goals against the Wilmington Hammerheads in a U.S. Open Cup match on May 29, 2013.
2 Defender Josecarlos Van Rankin notched an assist for the second consecutive match when he found Diego Valeri for Portland's third goal of the night. Van Rankin made his Providence Park debut in the victory.
8 For the first time in club history, the Timbers will be one of the final eight teams alive in the CCL. Portland will next match up with the winner of the series between Mexico's Club America and CD Olimpia of Honduras.
