PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC announced today that the club has signed forward Tiffany Weimer for the remainder of the inaugural 2013 National Women’s Soccer League season. She will be added to the roster pending league approval and receipt of her International Transfer Certificate (ITC). Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Weimer, 29, joins Thorns FC after spending the 2012/13 Danish Elitedivisionen season with Fortuna Hjørring where she tallied a team-high 11 goals during the regular season as the club finished the season in second place behind undefeated Brondby. In all competitions, the three-time NSCAA All-American forward netted 14 goals as Fortuna Hjørring earned second place in the Danish Women’s Cup and reached the Round of 16 at the 2012/13 UEFA Women’s Champions League tournament.
“Tiffany Weimer is a seasoned professional,” head coach Cindy Parlow Cone said. “She will bring another level of sophistication to our attack as she can play anywhere in the midfield and as a forward.”
A Connecticut native, Weimer has earned professional and semi-professional experience in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) and abroad, playing for clubs in Finland, Brazil, Sweden and Denmark during her career.
In 2011, Weimer registered seven goals and four assists for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Women of the USL W-League before signing with Fortuna Hjørring in January of 2012. During the summer of 2012, Weimer returned to the United States and made three appearances for the New England Mutiny of WPSL Elite before returning to Denmark.
Drafted 17th overall in 2009 by FC Gold Pride, Weimer made 15 appearances for the club, recording a goal and three assists during the inaugural WPS season. Joining the Boston Breakers in 2010, Weimer spent half the year in Boston before transferring to Swedish side AIK for the second half of the Damallsvenskan season.
Prior to being drafted in WPS, Weimer spent time with Finnish club Åland United and Brazilian side Santos FC in 2008. In 2007, the two-time Hermann Trophy runner-up played for SoccerPlus Connecticut in WPSL.
A standout at Penn State University from 2002-05, Weimer scored 91 goals in 97 games during her four-year career with the Nittany Lions. She holds the NCAA record-long scoring streak (along with Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair) by recording a goal in 17 consecutive matches during her senior season in 2005. Weimer finished the 2005 season with 32 goals, coming in second in the nation behind Sinclair (39).
On the national team level, Weimer participated in training camps and made several appearances for the U.S. U-21 Women’s National Team from 2004-07 and was called into senior U.S. Women’s National Team training camp in January 2007 and again in February 2008.
