PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC announced today that forward Alex Morgan sustained a mild medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprain in her left knee on Wednesday night, an examination by Portland Timbers Director of Medicine Dr. Richard Edelson at Sports Medicine Oregon in Tigard, Ore., confirmed Thursday afternoon.
Morgan will begin rehabilitation immediately at Providence Sports Care Center at JELD-WEN Field and with Portland Timbers medical personnel. She is expected to miss between 2-4 weeks.
“It’s a relief that there is no significant damage to my knee. I will do everything in my power between now and Aug. 24 in order to be available for the playoffs and to win the championship,” Morgan said.
The Thorns FC forward sustained the injury in the eighth minute of Wednesday’s 2-1 loss against the Boston Breakers at Dilboy Stadium after landing awkwardly on her left leg following a challenge from a Boston defender.
Thorns FC close out the regular season with road games against the Western New York Flash on Saturday and Seattle Reign FC on Aug. 17. The semifinal round of the National Women’s Soccer League playoffs begins Aug. 24 at a location to be determined.
