PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC goalkeeper Michelle Betos was named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 10 of the 2015 NWSL season, it was announced today. The selection marks Betos’ first NWSL Player of the Week honor of her career.
Trailing 1-0 and playing with 10 players, Betos was sent into the box on a corner kick in the final seconds of second-half stoppage time as Thorns FC searched for an equalizer against FC Kansas City on June 19 at Providence Park. Midfielder Allie Long served a ball near the penalty spot and Betos launched herself forward for a diving header that cleared the goal line before FC Kansas City could clear the ball away.
Additionally, the goal was featured as the No. 2 play on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays the same night.
Betos finished the match with four saves, including a critical stop minutes before the game-tying goal. FC Kansas City forward Caroline Kastor received a through ball in space and was one-on-one with Betos, who made a diving stop on the breakaway opportunity.
Thorns FC return to action against Sky Blue FC on Friday, July 3, at Providence Park; kickoff is set for 7 p.m. (Pacific).
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
