Group play finished up on Monday at the Algarve and Cyprus Cup as placement matches were decided on the final day. Canada and Australia each picked up wins, while England and the United States earned draws.
The Cyprus Cup final will feature the second Thorns-vs.-Thorns matchup in these tournaments. Christine Sinclair, Rhian Wilkinson, Kaylyn Kyle and Canada will meet Jodie Taylor and England in the championship match on Wednesday.
Canada earned a 1-0 victory over Italy on Monday as both Sinclair and Wilkinson were in the starting lineup. Wednesday will mark Canada’s seventh appearance in the Cyprus Cup final as they shoot for a fourth tournament title.
Meanwhile, England played to a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands as Taylor saw action in the match as a second-half sub. At the Algarve Cup in Portugal, all three Thorns FC players started for the United States in a 0-0 draw against Iceland. The United States will play in the tournament’s title game for the 14th time on Wednesday and will be in search of its 10th Algarve Cup trophy.
Alex Morgan made her third consecutive start in the tournament, while Tobin Heath and Rachel Van Hollebeke made their first starts at the 2015 Algarve Cup. Van Hollebeke made her first appearance for the USWNT since April 10, 2014. For full match highlights, click here.
Thorns FC defender Steph Catley helped the Matildas keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Finland, earning her third straight start in the tournament.
