If the name Marian Dougherty sounds familiar, it might be because the defender had the distinction of scoring Portland Thorns FC’s first home goal in franchise history in a 2-1 victory over Seattle Reign FC. However, fans might also recognize her from a multitude of other appearances, including 11 caps with the United States Women’s National Team.
A four-year starter at Santa Clara University, Dougherty started 81 of her 85 matches for the Broncos from 2003-06. She was named the 2006 West Coast Conference Player of the Year, leading all conference defenders with six goals, six assists and 18 points.
After college, Dougherty made 40 appearances for the Chicago Red Stars of the WPS before making the move to Florida’s magicJack. With the 2011 magicJack, Dougherty played alongside current Thorns FC teammates Nikki Washington and Karina LeBlanc, as well as United States Women’s National Team players Shannon Boxx, Tina Ellertson, Christie Rampone, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn, Hope Solo, and Abby Wambach.
On February 7, 2013, Thorns FC selected Dougherty in the fourth round of the NWSL Supplemental Draft. Fresh from her first-ever Thorns goal, we caught up with her for this edition of Pop Quiz.
