PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Thorns FC forward Christine Sinclair, midfielder Kaylyn Kyle and defender Rhian Wilkinson were named to the 23-player Canada Women’s National Team roster for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, it was announced today. The roster will not become official until it is submitted to FIFA on May 25, which is the deadline for all teams to submit their final squads.
Playing in Group A, Canada plays its first two group games at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. Canada takes on China PR on June 6 at 3 p.m. (Pacific) in the first match of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup and faces New Zealand on June 11; kickoff is set for 3 p.m. (Pacific). Closing out group play on June 15, Canada plays the Netherlands at Olympic Stadium in Montreal at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific). The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup runs from June 6-July 5 and all 52 games will be shown live on FOX, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and on tablets and mobile devices through the FOX Sports GO app and FOXSportsGO.com.
Sinclair, 31, is in her third season for Thorns FC and appeared in her 45th career match for the club, tallying her first goal of the 2015 season in a 2-2 draw against Chicago on Saturday. This is Sinclair’s fourth appearance on a FIFA Women’s World Cup Roster. The captain of the Canada Women’s National Team played in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, helping guide Canada to a fourth-place finish in 2003. Sinclair has 222 international caps and 153 goals for Canada, while she has appeared in 12 FIFA Women’s World Cup matches (all starts), recording seven goals and two assists.
Kyle, 26, was acquired by Thorns FC through the National Team Allocation process, and made her debut for the club as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 win against the Western New York Flash on April 18. The midfielder has 95 international caps and is being named to her second FIFA Women’s World Cup roster. Kyle started all three group matches for Canada at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.
Wilkinson, 32, made her debut for Thorns FC on April 18 against the Western New York Flash, playing 45 minutes in a 1-0 victory. Wilkinson is in her first season for Portland after being acquired through the National Team Allocation process. This is Wilkinson’s fourth time being named to a FIFA Women’s World Cup roster, having made 163 appearances with the Canada Women’s National Team. Wilkinson played in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cups, appearing in 12 matches.
