PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers today announced that the club has added longtime coach and former professional player Brad Agoos to the Portland Timbers Academy coaching staff.
Agoos has more than 20 years of coaching experience at multiple levels and played professionally for eight years in the United States, Costa Rica, Germany and The Netherlands. He recently served as a national team scout for U.S. Soccer, evaluating and identifying prospective players for national teams, and holds a USSF “A” License and a KNVB Trainer Coach III License (Holland).
A native of Dallas, Texas, Agoos has coached at the collegiate level for more than a decade, including time at the University of California, Berkeley (2000-06) as an assistant coach and six years (2006-11) as the head coach at Seattle University. He guided Seattle University to consecutive conference titles and NCAA Division II Tournament appearances in 2006-07, and played a significant role in the school’s successful transition to a Division I program.
During his professional playing career, Agoos played for clubs in four different countries. He started his career in 1993 with German club FC 08 Homburg, and went on to play for Major League Soccer’s D.C. United and the Worcester Wildfire, Charlotte Eagles and Charleston Battery of United Soccer Leagues. He also played for Costa Rican first-division club Puntarenas FC in 1997 and Dutch side Quick Den Haag in 1999.
Agoos was a collegiate standout at the University of Virginia from 1989-92, under former coach Bruce Arena, and helped the Cavaliers capture national championships in 1989, 1991 and 1992. Agoos ranks among the all-time assist leaders in Cavalier history.
Timbers U-18, U-16 Academy teams open preseason training
Timbers Academy teams have begun preseason training as they prepare for the upcoming 2013-14 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season. The teams have held regular training sessions since the start of preseason on Aug. 12.
“The coaching staff has been pleased and impressed with the first week of preseason training,” said Mike Smith, Timbers Academy director. “With the U-18s, it is great to see the talent of last season’s returners mix together and challenge for places. It has also been exciting to see the level of talent in our younger team. They have been introduced to the Timbers style of play this week and are working hard to do what the coaches are asking of them.”
