PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers Academy teams played their first home matches of the 2013-14 U.S. Soccer Development Academy season over the weekend, taking on the Chivas USA and LA Galaxy academy teams at the adidas Timbers Training Center.
The Timbers U-18 Academy (1-2-1, 4pts) opened the weekend with a 1-1 draw against the Chivas USA U-18 Academy on Saturday. The Timbers U-18s captured a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as a result of an own goal, but Chivas USA’s U-18 side was able to equalize in the 36th minute on a goal by Paul Salcedo.
On Sunday, the Galaxy U-18 Academy handed the Timbers U-18s a 5-1 loss at the adidas Timbers Training Center. After an early brace from the Galaxy’s Jaime Villarreal, scoring in the 15th and 23rd minutes, Timbers U-18s midfielder Jessie Garcia (Hillsboro, Ore.) pulled one back with his first goal of the season in the 25th minute. The Galaxy U-18s then scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory.

The Timbers U-16 Academy (1-2-1, 4pts) suffered their first losses of the season. On Saturday, Davis Chimento (Sherwood, Ore.) scored for the Timbers U-16s in a 2-1 loss to the Chivas USA U-16 Academy. The Timbers’ U-16 side hit the woodwork twice during the match.
Against the LA Galaxy U-16 Academy on Sunday, the Timbers U-16s were dealt a 6-0 loss. The Galaxy’s Jorge Ruiz netted a first half hat trick, leading his team to a 4-0 lead at halftime. The Galaxy U-16s tacked on two more in the second half on a brace by Jesus Nunez.

The Timbers Academy play host to the San Jose Earthquakes Academy on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Cal Odyssey on Sunday, Oct. 6, in their next matches at the adidas Timbers Training Center. For both matches, the kickoff time for the U-18 teams is 12 noon (Pacific), and for the U-16 teams is 2:30 p.m.
Timbers Academy players play for Timbers Reserves against Rapids Reserves
Over the weekend, members of the Timbers Academy saw time with the Portland Timbers Reserves in their MLS Reserve League match against the Colorado Rapids Reserves at JELD-WEN Field. Click here for a recap of the match.
Among the appearances, Alex Segovia (Hillsboro, Ore.) played the full 90 for the Timbers Reserves, while Jacob Kempf (Camas, Wash.) came on at halftime and played the final 45 minutes; both are second-year members of the Timbers Academy.
