PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Timbers are set to host the Western Conference Final of the Audi 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs against Real Salt Lake on Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m. (Pacific), the league announced tonight. The match will feature a national broadcast on FS1 and FOX Deportes with radio broadcasts on 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
The Timbers advanced to the Western Conference Final after defeating the Colorado Rapids (No. 1 seed) 1-0. It marks Portland’s fourth appearance in a conference final (2013, 2015, 2018, 2021).
Saturday’s match is Portland’s fourth meeting with Real Salt Lake in the 2021 campaign after sweeping the season series with three victories, two of them at Providence Park. In those three matches (Aug. 7, Sept. 25, Nov. 3), the Timbers outscored Salt Lake 12-4 (3-2, 6-1, 3-1) scoring the most goals against any team in the league this season. Seven different Timbers players have scored at least one goal against Salt Lake this season, and 10 different players have tallied at least one assist, recording 12 overall. On Sept. 25, the Timbers matched the club’s largest margin of victory (5) since October in 2020 when they defeated Salt Lake, 6-1. The victory also marked the first time in club history that six different players scored a goal in a single game.
The two sides will meet in the playoffs for the fourth time in league history. Portland faced Real Salt Lake in the 2013 Western Conference Final, dropping a result in both legs on Nov. 10 and Nov. 24. They met again six seasons later in the first round of the 2019 playoffs on Oct. 19 before losing 2-1 at Rio Tinto Stadium.
