On-loan Portland Timbers defender Liam Ridgewell received his first start with Wigan Athletic over the weekend in the Latics 3-1 loss to Birmingham City in the English Championship League. Playing on the road at St. Andrews, Ridgewell took part in the opening 45 minutes before being subbed out at half for defender Martyn Waghorn.
Ridgewell, whose loan was announced last week, had participated in a number of training sessions with the Wigan squad and was quickly brought up to speed with manager Malky Mackay's side.
Wigan next face Blackburn Rovers at home at DW Stadium on January 17. Following his loan stint, Ridgewell will rejoin the Timbers prior to the 2015 Simple Invitational on Feb. 22.
