CARSON, Calif. — Two-goal performances by forward Tristan Bowen and midfielder Jorge Villafaña guided the Chivas USA Reserves to a 4-1 win over a 10-man Portland Timbers Reserves in MLS Reserve League play Sunday morning at the StubHub Center University Field 2.
Bowen finished the match with two goals and one assist for the Chivas USA Reserves (4-3-1, 13pts).
The Chivas USA Reserves took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute on Bowen’s first goal of the match. The Timbers Reserves (4-5-3, 15pts) were reduced to 10 players shortly after when defender Alvas Powell was issued a straight red card by referee Robert Sarfaraz following a hard challenge on Chivas USA’s Amro Abdel-Aziz in the 41st minute.
Bowen capped his brace in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring in the 48th minute off an assist by midfielder Gabriel Farfan to lift the Chivas USA Reserves to a 2-0 lead. The Timbers Reserves then pulled one back in the 55th minute, with forward Ryan Johnson converting a cross from midfielder Ben Zemanski on a shorthanded goal to trim the deficit.
Villafaña entered the match as a substitute in the 66th minute and provided a pair of unanswered goals to seal the win for the Chivas USA Reserves. Villafaña put away a feed from Bowen seven minutes after entering the match in the 73rd minute and then scored again in the 82nd minute.
The Timbers Reserves played their final road match of the 2013 MLS Reserve League season Sunday, and return home for their final two matches of the campaign on Saturday, Sept. 21, against the Colorado Rapids Reserves and Monday, Oct. 14, against the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves at JELD-WEN Field.
