Pessoa earns CBF license as he prepares to lead the Timbers U15s at 2024 Generation adidas Cup in late March.

Timbers U-15 Academy Head Coach Fernando Pessoa earned a physical education degree from Gama Filho University in his native Brazil in 2002. 22 years later, having worked for multiple international clubs, he arrived back on home soil to earn his Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) Pro License in Rio de Janeiro.

“The more I learn about the pro level the better I can work to produce a higher-level athlete for the next stage, which today is my priority.”

With his name circulating on the candidate list for a CBF Pro License, Pessoa was invited in September 2023 to acquire said License. Obtaining the CBF Pro License consisted of three stages: 22 online classes from October to December, in-person classes for two weeks in December, and an individual assignment from January to April.

“The course brings together different professionals to run a class about the same subject and makes you evaluate and discuss different points of view from professionals with experience in big clubs, leagues, national teams, World Cups, and Olympic Games," he said. "There is no right or wrong, there is what works for you in your environment.”

Pessoa elevating his coaching credentials with a CBF Pro License adds to a list of impressive achievements for the Brazilian. Named the Timbers U-15 head coach in 2019, Pessoa claimed the first international title for the Timbers Academy in 2022, winning the Generation adidas Cup. It was the first time an MLS team had won that age group at the tournament.

The 2024 edition of the Generation adidas Cup begins March 30th in Bradenton, Florida. Pessoa’s U-15 side is in excellent form, undefeated in five games including impressive five-goal performances over Seattle in late January and LAFC at Providence Park on February 25th.

“I'll be looking to bring more tools for individual tactics and individual development where the players can learn more about themselves, improve their technical aspects, emotional balance, share more with the specific staff because the staff can deliver and help them," said Pessoa.

With first-year Timbers Head Coach Phil Neville emphasizing the importance of the academy and Timbers2, individuals like Fernando Pessoa are integral to the future growth and success of the club.
