SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Defender Dennis Castillo scored in a second consecutive match to help lead the Portland Timbers U-23s to a 1-0 win on the road against Lane United FC at the Willamalane Center on Friday night.
Squaring off against Lane United FC for a second straight match, Portland extended its unbeaten streak to six games with the win. The shutout was the third of the season for the Timbers U-23s and the second on the road in 2014.
Castillo tallied the game-winning goal in the 67th minute as forward Kharlton Belmar broke free down the left side and slotted a ball low through the box to Castillo who finished at the far post. The goal was Castillo’s second in as many games and his second against Lane United FC this season, while Belmar registered his first assist of 2014.
The Timbers U-23s (5-4-4, 19pts) nearly took the lead in the 42nd minute when Castillo rose to meet a corner kick from the right side, but his header rebounded off the crossbar.
Portland goalkeeper Brendan Moore kept a clean sheet, registering his second shutout of the season.
The Timbers U-23s return to the Rose City for their final regular-season match of the season against Washington Crossfire on Monday, July 14, at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Ore. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
